Fund crunch delays Yadgir water project

The much awaited drinking water project, providing water from Krishna River to Kollur (M) village, in Shahpur taluk, of Yadgir district, may get delayed by another several months due to shortage of funds to complete the electricity supply work to the project.

The project had been taken up under the Regular Drinking Water scheme, at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh in 2014-15, and 80 percent of the work of laying Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipelines has already been completed.

The rest of the 20 percent of the work, of laying Galvanized Iron (GI) pipelines, is yet to be completed by the contractor, with whom the works were allotted through tender.“An inordinate delay in implementing the project has forced us to demand that the authorities complete the project before worsening the drinking water situation,” Shivareddy, a resident of village has said.

Now, residents are being supplied water through pipelines connected from an open well and a borewell. However, most of the time, the water supply is affected by interruption in power supply and water shortage in the well.

“If the project is completed shortly, residents will get drinking water regularly,” Mr. Shivareddy added.

Meanwhile, officials of Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, of Shahpur Sub Division, have submitted a proposal to the Division Office at Yadgir to release the required Rs. 5 lakh to complete the electricity supply work. The proposal is yet to be sanctioned.

The proposal is still with the Division Office and the remaining work will be completed soon after the required grant is released, Rajkumar Pattar, Assistant Executive Engineer, told The Hindu over the phone, on Friday. When contacted, M.S. Moinuddin, Executive Engineer of Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Department , said that the proposal would be sanctioned shortly, as it was delayed because there was no proposal sanctioned in the last year’s budget.
