"CIAL Partners with BPCL to Establish Green Hydrogen Plant at Airport"

In a significant stride towards advancing green energy endeavors, Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has forged a partnership with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to establish a green hydrogen plant within the airport premises.

This collaborative venture, leveraging technological expertise and existing infrastructure, is set to create the world's inaugural green hydrogen plant and fuelling station situated within an airport environment. Green hydrogen, derived from water using renewable energy sources, holds promise as a future fuel, aligning with zero-carbon energy strategies.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony took place at the Legislative Complex in Thiruvananthapuram, in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

CIAL, renowned for its effective integration of green energy solutions such as large-scale solar plants and hydel stations, boasts a cumulative installed capacity of 50 MW, generating two hundred thousand units of power daily. Having progressively expanded its capabilities since its inaugural 12 MW plant, CIAL has now embarked on a landmark collaboration with BPCL to establish a 1,000 KW pilot project at the airport.

Under the terms of the agreement, BPCL will spearhead the establishment of the integrated green hydrogen plant and fuelling station, providing technology expertise and overseeing operations. CIAL, on the other hand, will contribute suitable land, water, and green energy resources. Initially, the plant's output will power vehicles within the airport.

S Suhas, Managing Director of CIAL, expressed enthusiasm for this groundbreaking collaboration, highlighting CIAL's role as pioneers in sustainable aviation. He emphasized the significance of this strategic initiative in advancing green energy goals and steering the aviation sector closer to a zero-carbon future.

G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, lauded the partnership as a pivotal moment in the journey towards sustainable solutions. He underscored the importance of innovation and collaboration in driving meaningful change, reiterating BPCL's commitment to India's energy independence, exemplified by initiatives like "AatmaNirbhar Bharat" and the indigenous electrolyser showcased at India Energy Week 2024.
