Chennai’s Proposed Second Airport Could Depend on Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Government’s Position.

The newly formed government led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is facing a crucial decision over the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur, with the outcome expected to shape Chennai’s long-term aviation infrastructure plans.

The proposed second airport at Parandur has become a focal point for passengers, industry stakeholders and investors, who see the project as essential to meeting Chennai’s growing air traffic demand. However, uncertainty persists after Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay had earlier expressed support for villagers and farmers opposing the project over concerns related to land acquisition and loss of livelihoods.

Speculation intensified following reports that Chief Minister Vijay had conducted a review meeting on the Parandur airport proposal. However, multiple government sources denied to businessline that any such consultation had taken place, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the project.

The government’s eventual stance is expected to have significant implications for infrastructure development, investor sentiment and Chennai’s ambitions to expand its aviation capacity through a second airport.
