Chennai to Receive Additional Railway Terminal

In a move to alleviate congestion at Chennai Central, the Southern Railway has announced plans to develop Villivakkam railway station into a terminal, according to General Manager RN Singh. The decision comes as a response to the need for an additional terminal to manage the departure and arrival of trains more efficiently.

Speaking to reporters, Singh shared that an initial survey indicated the suitability of Villivakkam station for transformation into a terminal. The availability of land further supports this development. Currently, a detailed project report is in the preparation phase and is expected to be ready within a month.

"The need for a fourth terminal is imperative to decongest the existing terminals. The detailed project report will provide a comprehensive plan for the transformation, and once approved, the actual work may take up to three years," stated Singh.

Simultaneously, the Railways is also in the process of developing Tambaram as the third terminal, emphasizing the strategic approach to improve railway infrastructure and streamline operations in the region.
