Adani Sends First Batch of Cathodes from New Copper Refinery in Mundra
Adani Enterprises' subsidiary, Kutch Copper, marked a significant milestone on Thursday with the commissioning of the first unit of its greenfield copper refinery project in Mundra. The company announced the dispatch of the inaugural batch of cathodes to customers.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "With Kutch Copper commencing operations, the Adani portfolio of companies is not only entering the metals sector but also driving India’s leap towards a sustainable and aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) future." He emphasized the project's commitment to advancing India's position in the global copper sector while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
Adani Enterprises is investing approximately $1.2 billion in establishing a copper smelter with a capacity of 0.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in the initial phase. Upon completion of the second phase, which will add a similar capacity, Kutch Copper, boasting 1 MTPA, will become the world’s largest single-location custom smelter. The project aims to set ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance standards while integrating cutting-edge technology and digitalization, thereby generating around 2,000 direct and 5,000 indirect employment opportunities.
As part of its forward integration strategy, Kutch Copper is also working towards establishing Kutch Copper Tubes Ltd, aiming to diversify its portfolio with copper tubes for applications in air conditioning and refrigeration. The company highlighted its commitment to environmental stewardship, with engineered technology designed to minimize carbon footprint. Notably, one-third of the plant area has been allocated as green belt space, and 15 percent of the capital has been dedicated to environmental protection measures.
In line with its eco-conscious approach, the plant has implemented a zero-liquid discharge model and utilizes desalinated water for operations. Additionally, the company emphasizes wastewater recycling within processes to mitigate waste generation.
