Water supply project to take off in April.
The much-awaited water supply project for Vellore - Combined Water Supply Scheme (CWSS) - is likely to be completed by the end of March, and will be followed by a six-month trial run.
Work on the Rs. 1,295-crore CWSS with river Cauvery as source, which will cover Vellore Corporation, 11 municipalities, five town panchayats and 944 rural habitations, commenced in 2012.
C. Vijayaraj Kumar, managing director of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board reviewed the progress of works from Mettur in Salem till Arakkonam in Vellore district on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, he along with Collector R. Nanthagopal conducted a joint inspection of the project works.
Officials said the MD inspected the project work starting from the headwork at Mettur, reaching Tirupattur, Vellore up to Ocheri and Arakkonam during the two-day inspection. Work along the entire pumping main alignment from zero to 320 kilometres was reviewed and bottlenecks were studied during a review meeting with district officials.
The Collector said that the project will be commissioned during the first week of April.
