Vizhinjam to Emerge as Sea-Air Transhipment Hub, Says Adani Port SEZ CEO
At the Vizhinjam Conclave 2025, Pranav Choudhary, CEO of Adani Ports SEZ, unveiled an ambitious roadmap for transforming Vizhinjam International Seaport into a global maritime hub. Reflecting on the port's journey since its inception in 2015 and the commencement of its commercial operations in 2024, Choudhary highlighted the port’s strategic importance in reshaping India’s maritime logistics.
Presenting the Future Roadmap for Adani Vizhinjam Ports Pvt. Ltd., Choudhary outlined how Vizhinjam is poised to become one of South Asia’s fastest-growing ports. Since its launch, the port has handled 100 vessels, with expectations to increase that number to 250 vessels in the near future.
Choudhary also emphasized Vizhinjam’s unique position as a successful semi-automatic vessel transshipment hub, placing it on par with leading global ports such as Los Angeles. The port's state-of-the-art infrastructure includes 18 remotely operated cranes, ensuring smooth container transshipment operations.
Strategically located at the crossroads of major global trade routes, Vizhinjam bridges the Far East and the Far West, connecting key ports such as Shanghai, Busan, Rotterdam, and various African ports. It also enhances connectivity with prominent Indian ports like Kandla and Mundra.
Looking ahead, the second phase of development will focus on expanding the port’s capacity for handling non-liquid cargo and doubling its connectivity routes. A major highlight of this expansion is Vizhinjam’s transformation into a sea-air transshipment hub, setting it apart as a multimodal logistics solution provider.
Beyond port operations, the development of industrial clusters and a growth corridor in the outer areas of Vizhinjam aims to boost Kerala’s industries, including food processing, electronics, and apparel. This initiative is expected to position Kerala as a key logistics consolidation hub.
Choudhary urged government bodies and stakeholders to align with Vizhinjam’s growth trajectory to capitalize on the emerging opportunities.
