Visakhapatnam Port Embarks on Green Transformation Journey.

Visakhapatnam Port has embarked on an ambitious journey to transform itself into a fully green port within the next few years, driven by a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives launched by the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA).

The port's green transformation spans the entire spectrum of operations — from mechanisation and electrification of bulk cargo terminals to cleaner tug operations and energy use. “In line with the Harit Sagar Guidelines of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, we are implementing several measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions and minimise environmental impact to uphold our status as a sustainable eco-port,” said M. Angamuthu, Chairperson, VPA, in an interview with BusinessLine.

Several key steps are already in place. Major bulk cargo terminals have been fully mechanised and now operate entirely on electric systems. In addition, modernisation of five berths and other infrastructure upgrades under public-private partnership (PPP) mode are currently underway and are expected to be completed by March 2027, with all new equipment running on electricity.

The port is also phasing out diesel-powered harbour mobile cranes and replacing them with electric variants, further advancing its shift toward clean and efficient operations.

With these efforts, Visakhapatnam Port is positioning itself as a national leader in sustainable maritime infrastructure, aligning with India’s broader climate and energy goals.
