Underground power cable works likely to be completed by June.

Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) is hopeful of completing the underground electricity cable works taken up in the city by the end of June this year.

The project started in the district two years ago under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme and these works were initially expected to be completed by the end of March.

An official of Tangedco told The Hindu that both, low tension and high tension, lines would go underground in areas such as RS Puram, Ramanathapuram, Gandhipuram and Krishnasamy Nagar.

The underground cable works included new cables and conversion of overhead lines to underground cables.

New underground HT lines would be laid for 10 km, and 94 km of overhead lines would be converted into underground lines. In the case of LT lines, nearly 150 km overhead lines would be converted.

In residential areas, the service cables would also be underground.

The R-APDRP project taken up a cost of about Rs. 300 crore in the district includes setting up of RMU (Ring Main Unit) panels across the city and the cables connecting these will also be underground.
