NTPC Scouting for Land in Over a Dozen States to Set Up Nuclear Power Plants.

Power sector giant NTPC Ltd is scouting for suitable land parcels across 16 states—including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Haryana—to establish nuclear power plants (NPPs) with capacities of up to 1,600 megawatts (MW).

The state-run company, India’s largest power producer, is expected to contribute about one-third of the nation’s ambitious goal of installing 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047 under the government’s Viksit Bharat vision.

According to sources, NTPC has floated a new subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam (NPUN), to spearhead its nuclear energy initiatives. The subsidiary will focus on setting up conventional nuclear power plants with capacities of 1,200 MW to 1,600 MW, based on Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology.

The move marks a major step in NTPC’s strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce carbon emissions, as the company increasingly shifts its focus from fossil fuels to clean and sustainable energy sources.
