Major Boost for Green Shipping: Mumbai Selected for BIMSTEC Centre.

A new Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre is set to be established in Mumbai, a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly shipping practices in the region.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal made the announcement on Monday during the inaugural session of the second BIMSTEC Ports Conclave in Visakhapatnam. The center will be housed under the Indian Ocean Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Maritime Transport (IOCE-SMarT) at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai, Mumbai.

The establishment of this center underscores India's commitment to fostering sustainable maritime development and cooperation among BIMSTEC member nations, which include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It is expected to play a crucial role in research, training, and policy development related to sustainable shipping.
