Maharashtra Approves ₹6,477.8 Crore for Jayakwadi Irrigation Project Phase 2.

The Maharashtra Cabinet recently approved a ₹6,477.88 crore allocation for Phase II of the Jayakwadi irrigation project in Marathwada, giving a fresh push to the development of the Majalgaon Dam on the Sindphana River in the Godavari Valley.

The project is expected to provide irrigation benefits to around 1.31 lakh hectares across five districts — Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Beed, Parbhani and Nanded.

The approval marks the fifth revised administrative approval for Phase II of the Jayakwadi project. It will include the development of the Majalgaon (Loni Sawangi) Uplift Scheme, Salimba Drip Uplift Scheme, Shiras Marg Low Level Dam and Roshanpuri High Level Dam.

The project also includes construction of the 148-km Majalgaon Right Canal and six on-road reservoirs at Galhati, Dhond, Ukadgaon, Murambi, Pendu and Subhashnagar, besides raising the height of the Majalgaon-Masoli Project.

An official said the Jayakwadi project was planned in two phases. Phase I included the Jayakwadi Dam and the 208-km Paithan Left Canal, along with its branch canals, distributors and sub- and minor distributors. Work on these components has been completed.

Phase II covers works related to the Paithan Right Canal, Majalgaon Dam and Majalgaon Right Canal, making it a key irrigation project for the Marathwada region.

The revised approval is expected to accelerate work on the project and expand irrigation infrastructure across the drought-prone region.
