Krishna Water Project-III to be Ready by June.

Municipal administration and urban development principal secretary MG Gopal has directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to expedite the work on Phase-III of Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project Scheme so as to complete 50 pc of the work by the end of March and the entire project by June this year.

KDWSP Phase-III is being executed at a cost of Rs. 1,670 crore. The project aims at bringing 90 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Greater Hyderabad.

As against the demand of 480 to 500 MGD, the HMWS&SB is managing to supply about 340 MGD to Greater Hyderabad. At present, Krishna Phase I and II are supplying 180 MGD of water (90 MGD each).

Gopal, along with HMWS&SB managing director M.Jagadeeshwar, directors G Rameshwar Rao (operations) and S Prabhakar Sharma(technical) and others inspected the progress of works at different sites.

The demand for drinking water in the twin cities is rising due to rapid urbanisation and merger of surrounding municipalities with the city. Development of IT and ORR growth corridors, and industrial clusters have also created a huge additional demand for drinking water.

The project consists of construction of a water treatment plant of 90 MGD capacity, construction of clear water reservoirs, balancing reservoirs of 117 ML capacity to facilitate intermediate pumping, construction of pump houses and erection of pumping equipment; laying of clear water transmission mains for a length of 113.5 km, laying of distribution trunk mains of 62 km length to connect service reservoirs.

The treatment plant will be constructed on the existing premises adjacent to the Phase-I and Phase-II WTPs at Kodandapur. The clear water and balancing reservoirs will be constructed on the existing premises adjacent to the Phase-I and II structures on the campuses.
