Gujarat to invest Rs 911.68 crore in Ahmedabad

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Government will upgrade the Ahmedabad-based Civil Hospital to a 5,150-bed facility to serve 25 lakh people annually.

The Government would invest Rs 911.68 crore in two years to improve human development index. The project would be completed in 2010 when Gujarat celebrates the golden jubilee of its foundation.

Making this announcement at his annual Diwali lunch for journalists here, the Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, said the hospital, which has 2,150 beds, already serves as an inter-State health complex catering to the needs of patients from many districts of adjoining Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as well.

Built in the Asarva area of the city in 1952, Civil Hospital treats 6.5 lakh patients every year. It is considered to be one of Asia’s largest health campuses complete with a medical and a dental college.

College Plans

If the State Government gets permission from the Centre for additional seats, medical colleges in night shifts would begin. They would use the available infrastructure, as is the practice in some engineering colleges in the State.

Under the upgradation and renovation project, new buildings, operation theatres and several medical facilities would be set up on the premises.

The new hospital would have an additional trauma centre, and multi-specialty and super-specialty healthcare and medical education centres.

All old buildings and constructions would be removed from the 110-acre complex.

Civil Hospital is surrounded by four hospitals of different specialties — cardiology, eye care, cancer and tuberculosis.
