CleanMax to Develop 33 MW Renewable Energy Projects for Equinix Data Centers.
Equinix Inc. has partnered with CleanMax to develop a 33 MW renewable energy project in Maharashtra, marking its first power purchase agreement (PPA) in India. The initiative aims to supply renewable energy to support Equinix’s expanding data center operations in Mumbai and align with India’s renewable energy goals.
The project, a 33 MW captive power plant comprising 26.4 MWp of solar capacity and 6.6 MW of wind capacity, will be operational in phases by 2025. It will provide clean energy for Equinix’s International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers in Mumbai, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.
CleanMax was selected after a rigorous evaluation by Equinix’s global management team. Beyond this project, CleanMax plans to collaborate on sustainability solutions for Equinix’s upcoming AI-ready data centers in India and worldwide.
This PPA underscores Equinix’s strategy to integrate renewable energy into its operations and meet the rising demand for digital infrastructure fueled by AI adoption. Globally, Equinix has executed 23 PPAs, contributing over 3.1 million MWh of renewable energy annually across markets like the US, Australia, France, India, and Singapore.
In addition to PPAs, Equinix invests in energy efficiency initiatives to optimize its operations. In 2023, the company spent $77.5 million on projects that reduced annual energy consumption by 66,862 MWh and improved Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) by 8.8% year-over-year.
