China begins bridge to North Korea.

China has begun construction of a new bridge link to North Korea.

The bridge over the Tumen River will cost around $22mn (137mn yuan) and will be 804.7m long, according to China's state news agency, which said that it would become a new route for bilateral trade between the two nations.

It is set to open in 2015 or 2016, and will replace an older bridge that has not been repaired for years and is now deemed a safety risk.

Relations between China and North Korea had become strained recently, partly as a result of last year's nuclear test by North Korea. However, it has continued to provide economic support to the country.
