Work on Cauvery bridge in full swing at Kumbakonam.

The Kumbakonam municipality has taken up work on the construction of a bridge across the Cauvery in the town, linking a cluster of wards with the town.

The bridge has been the need of residents of the Kumbakonam town for decades. Although a bridge was built across the river decades ago, it was narrow and hindered the flow of traffic. Hence, the need for a wider bridge.

The work, sanctioned under the ‘Infrastructure and Amenities Fund’, is being executed at an estimate of ₹8 crore.

The bridge will be 79 metre in length and 14.8 metre in width, with a carriage space for 12.8 metre. It will have nine spans, each of 18 metre.

An official told The Hindu on Wednesday that the bridge would be a vital link between a number of wards with busy thoroughfares. It would also ease trafffic congestion across the Cauvery to a great extent.
