Torrent Group to Acquire 67% Stake in Gujarat Titans for ₹5,000 Crore.

Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a 67% majority stake in Gujarat Titans, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, in a deal valued at over ₹5,000 crore.

The acquisition will be executed through Torrent Investments Private Ltd (TIPL), which will purchase the stake from Irelia Company Pte Ltd, fully owned by funds managed or advised by CVC Capital Partners. As part of the deal, CVC will retain a 33% minority stake in the franchise. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, including from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Industry sources estimate that the agreement values Gujarat Titans at ₹7,500 crore, significantly higher than the ₹5,625 crore bid CVC Capital Partners placed to acquire the team in 2021.

Jinal Mehta, Director of Torrent Group, described the acquisition as a milestone for the company, stating, “As sports continue to gain prominence in India, Torrent sees great potential in this rapidly growing sector. We are excited to elevate the fan experience and unlock new growth avenues for Gujarat Titans.”

Siddharth Patel, Managing Partner at CVC, highlighted Gujarat Titans’ rapid success, including winning the IPL title in their debut season and finishing as runners-up the following year. Amit Soni, Partner at CVC, welcomed Torrent Group as a new partner, emphasizing the potential for further growth.

Torrent Group, with a ₹41,000 crore revenue and ₹2 lakh crore market capitalization, has a strong presence in pharmaceuticals, power, and city gas distribution. With this acquisition, the group is making its foray into the sports industry, aiming to build a lasting legacy for Gujarat Titans, whose home ground is the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The new IPL season is set to begin on March 21.
