Tangedco plans to strengthen infrastructure in town panchayats.
As many as 21 town panchayats in the district will get new distribution transformers, high tension and low tension lines and digital ones to individual service connections – all under the Integrated Power Development Scheme of the Union Government.
A district-level committee, headed by Coimbatore MP A.P. Nagarajan, has been formed to oversee implementation of the scheme and its first meeting was held recently. A detailed project report, prepared by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), will be sent to the Union Government for approval.
The project will be implemented in areas such as Thondamuthur and Vettaikaranpudur in the district at a total cost of Rs. 71.23 crore and 75 per cent of the cost will be provided as grant by the Central Government.
This is a two-year project and works started in Coimbatore three months ago to prepare the report. It is proposed to have 967 new distribution transformers, 158 km of new high tension lines, 91.35 km of low tension lines, and 162.87 km of three phase lines (which as single phase lines now).
Further, for about 15.73 km, overhead power cables will be taken underground.
