K Vanlalvena, Mizoram’s lone Rajya Sabha member, recently urged the Centre to expedite three critical road projects, including two along the ["country","India","country"]–Myanmaracity connectivity to the Myanmar border and increasing congestion along the 21-km corridor between Aizawl and Sairang railway station.
The MP called on the Centre to designate two strategic routes connecting Hnahthial to Saisihchhuah in Lawngtlai district as national highways. These routes pass through key villages including Tarpho, Cherhlun, Thingsai, Sangau, South Vanlaiphai, and Pangkhua, terminating at the Myanmar border.
Vanlalvena highlighted the infrastructure disparity at the border, noting that Myanmar had completed a double-lane highway from Hakha in Chin state to Saisihchhuah on the Indo-Myanmar border in 2020. While Saisihchhuah has been designated an official border haat by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, proper road connectivity on the Indian side is lacking, limiting large-scale trade.
“Upgrading these routes to national highways is essential to fulfil the goals of the country’s Act East Policy, strengthen national security, and boost the economic development of Mizoram’s tribal population,” Vanlalvena said.
In addition to border connectivity, he raised concerns over the Aizawl–Sairang corridor. The recent opening of Sairang railway station has led to a surge in vehicular traffic, and the existing National Highway-6 (formerly NH-54) is insufficient to handle the volume. Vanlalvena urged the Centre to upgrade the stretch to a four-lane highway to prevent bottlenecks and support the state’s growing logistics needs.
