Maharashtra Plans Mumbai Water Metro, Seeks Kochi's DPR Expertise.

The Maharashtra government is exploring the feasibility of a water metro service for Mumbai and has requested the Kochi Water Metro to provide a detailed project report (DPR) for the initiative, according to Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane.

In an interview with PTI, Rane revealed that the DPR from the Kochi Water Metro is expected by the end of the current month. He further stated that a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be established to oversee the project's implementation in Mumbai, with a planned 50:50 equity partnership between the Maharashtra state government and the Union government.

Rane emphasized the untapped potential of Mumbai's waterways, noting that despite the city's formation from seven islands, its waterways have not been fully utilized. He asserted that developing a water metro system would significantly alleviate the traffic congestion plaguing Mumbai's roads and overburdened suburban railway network.

The initiative signifies the Maharashtra government's commitment to exploring alternative transportation solutions to address the city's growing infrastructure challenges. By leveraging the expertise and experience of the successful Kochi Water Metro, the state aims to develop a sustainable and efficient water-based transportation system for Mumbai's residents.
