JSW Steel Italy Signs Development Contract with Italian Government.

JSW Steel Italy Piombino S.P.A. (JSW Italy), a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Limited, has signed a Development Contract with the Italian government to modernise and expand its rail mill facility in Piombino. The agreement was formalised with the Ministry of Enterprise & Made in Italy (MIMIT), the Tuscany Region, and INVITALIA, Italy’s national agency for investment and economic development.

The Development Contract follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed on March 1, 2024, between JSW Steel Italy S.r.l. and MIMIT, aimed at revitalising the historic "Steelworks of Piombino" industrial site.

Under the contract, JSW Italy will receive a grant of €33 million from the Italian government through INVITALIA. The grant will support the €143 million Rail Mill Modernisation Project, which will nearly double the plant’s capacity from 0.32 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 0.6 MTPA. The upgrade will also enable the production of longer rails, increasing from the current 108 metres to up to 120 metres.

The modernised facility is expected to become a benchmark in the rail manufacturing sector, featuring advanced capabilities for producing ‘Head Hardened’ rails—specialised, high-strength rails used in high-speed and heavy-haul railways—positioning JSW Italy to tap into the European market for such products.

The contract is legally binding and subject to standard regulatory and legal conditions under Italian law. It reflects the collective commitment of JSW Italy, MIMIT, the Tuscany Region, and INVITALIA to foster industrial revival and economic development in the Piombino region.
