GMDA Requests NHAI to Address Underpass Issues Prior to Takeover of 3 NH8 Passages
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is poised to take control of three underpasses along the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, as confirmed by an official on Sunday. This development follows NHAI's approach to the metropolitan authority for the possession transfer, prompting GMDA to assess the underpasses and identify multiple faults, including wall cracks and seepage. GMDA has now requested NHAI to rectify these issues before the official handover. Over the past year, NHAI has urged GMDA to assume maintenance responsibilities for the Iffco Chowk, Signature Tower, and Rajiv Chowk underpasses.
GMDA initially hesitated due to structural deficiencies. NHAI subsequently sought state government intervention, leading to directions for GMDA to communicate identified shortcomings and oversee corrective measures before the formal handover. A GMDA official emphasized the need for repairs to wear and tear over time, with the government expected to make a policy decision on asset transfer, considering the underpasses are part of the national highway. The assessment revealed seepage at the Iffco Chowk underpass due to drainage issues, visible cracks in walls and roads across all three underpasses, damaged sheds and footpaths, and non-functional escalators at Signature Tower and Iffco Chowk.
