AIIMS at Mangalagiri Gets Centre's Nod.

The Union Cabinet recently gave the green signal for setting up of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Mangalagiri in Guntur district as per the proposal submitted by the State government earlier.

The Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a decision to set up three new AIIMS under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) across the country. “The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for setting up of three new AIIMS one at Manglagiri in AP, another at Nagpur in Maharashtra and third one at Kalyani in West Bengal under the PMSSY. This involves financial implication of Rs. 4,949 crore,” the Centre stated in a release.

Of the total expenditure of Rs 4,949 crore, the cost of the new AIIMS at Manglagiri would be to the tune of Rs 1,618 crore, at Nagpur Rs 1,577 crore and at Kalyani Rs 1,754 crore.

The Centre’s decision to set up AIIMS at Mangalagiri fulfils the promise made under the AP re-organisation Act, that provides for establishment of one AIIMS-type institute in the successor State of AP. Each proposed institution will have a hospital with a capacity of 960 beds. There would be a teaching block, administrative block, AYUSH block, auditorium, nursing college, night shelter, hostel and residential facilities in each AIIMS. Meanwhile, State Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas said the move would help the government in improving health care facilities in the State.
