TN power utility gets nod for 1,600 MW project.

In a boost to the State's power capacity addition plans, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation's (TANGEDCO) proposed 2x800 MW coal-fired power project has got environment clearance. The project is expected to cost ₹ 12,664 crore.

The super critical thermal project will come up in Thiruvadanai Taluk in Ramanathapuram district.

“The project was given environment clearance two weeks ago and the first unit of 800 MW is expected to be built over the next 42 months,” a senior TANGEDCO official told BusinessLine.

TANGEDCO awarded the turbine and generator contract worth ₹ 5,600 crore to public sector firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) in March, while the second package tender for BoP (balance of plant) will be floated soon, added the official.

The proposed 2 x 800 mw power plant would require about 6.90 million tonnes of coal per annum.

The plant will use imported as well as domestic coal. Coal is expected to be imported from Indonesia through Tuticorin Port Trust.

According to the data by the Centre, Tamil Nadu had a total installed thermal power capacity of 13,314 MW as on April 30, 2016. Tamil Nadu has entered into power purchasing contracts to buy over 3,000 MW to meet shortfall in demand, which has been growing at high single digit annually.
