Tata Group , JSW Group Accelerate EV Push With $1 Billion Bet on Battery Tech
Two Indian conglomerates, Tata Group and JSW Group, are planning to invest nearly $1 billion to strengthen domestic capabilities in electric-vehicle and battery technologies, according to people familiar with the matter. The move reflects growing urgency among India’s largest companies to reduce dependence on Chinese technology.
The two groups are separately funding research and development centres focused on developing in-house expertise in next-generation battery technologies and advanced EV systems, the people said, requesting anonymity as the discussions are private.
Batteries remain the most expensive and technically complex component of electric vehicles, and the planned investments underline a sharper push by Indian firms to build local manufacturing and technology capabilities. The developments also come as China becomes increasingly cautious about sharing critical technologies, amid escalating trade tensions and tariff disputes with the United States.
