Rail Auto Hub in Walajabad starts operations.

India’s first Rail Auto Hub, located at Walajabad near Chennai, has started operations with Hyundai Motors sending 124 cars to Changsari recently.

According to a statement issued by Southern Railway, 'Glovis India loaded 124 Hyundai cars in specially designed wagons to Changsari in North Frontier Railway. The first-ever loading has resulted in freight earnings of Rs. 16.37 lakh.'

“All the infrastructural facilities have been developed in house by Railways, including a custom-built ramp to facilitate loading of automobiles into wagons,” the statement added.

The announcement of the Rail Auto Hub was made by Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu during the Railway Budget 2016 in February.

This facility is close to factories of many automobile majors, including Hyundai, Nissan and Daimler.

The hub will cater to the over one million units of cars being produced per annum in these areas.
