Protest delays Polur ROB work.

Execution of Polur Road Over Bridge (ROB) work to replace a railway level crossing located on Vellore-Tiruvannamalai road is delayed in view of opposition from residents in the area.

Protesters fear that a portion of a church and an orphanage and some of the houses located along the Chetpet road may have to be demolished for building the bridge.

The ROB is to be executed by both the railways and State highways department.

The railways planned to close the level crossing forcing the residents to use bypass road as an alternative route, which is circuitous. Apprehensions of certain residents over loss of space, the difficult alternative route and the State government’s inability to start work simultaneously created a difficult situation. A section of people oppose the bridge altogether and another section want the government and railways to coordinate better.

A few days ago, officials spoke to residents who were preparing to stage a protest in view of the railways’ plan to close the level crossing. After sensing the public mood, authorities delayed their plan to close the level crossing. State officials have referred the matter to the Collector.
