Plan for multi-level car parking in Coimbatore.
The much-talked about multi-level car parking project in the city is getting a new lease of life. Coimbatore Corporation sources say the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure and Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) is updating the civic body’s detailed project report on the car parking project for implementation.
The sources also said that two months ago the Corporation submitted its multi-level car parking proposal to the TNUIFSL so that the latter could revisit the detailed project report of 2008 and update it to meet the current demand and future needs.
The Corporation had, in 2008, proposed the parking facilities on on Cross Cut Road, D.B. Road and Big Bazaar Street.
It then prepared a detailed project report with the help of a consultant, who proposed that the Big Bazaar Street multi-level car parking point would have the capacity to hold 82 passenger car equivalents, the Cross Cut Road parking would hold 495 passenger car equivalents and the D.B. Road car parking 111 passenger car equivalents.
The consultant had also proposed that the Corporation could build the car parking slots atop shopping complexes so as to improve the civic body’s revenue.
The Corporation accepted the detailed project report from the consultant and took it to the State Government for funding because the cost of the three multi-level car parking points was pegged at Rs. 80 crore.
The sources said that the Corporation submitting the detailed project report to the TNUIFSL had revived hopes of the parking project taking off.
