NTPC Marks 50th Foundation Day with Launch of Hydrogen-Fuel Bus and CO2-to-Methanol Plant.
On its 50th foundation day, state-run NTPC launched hydrogen-fuel buses set to operate in Ladakh, marking a milestone in sustainable transportation. The buses were virtually inaugurated by NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh.
Singh also announced a breakthrough in carbon management: NTPC's Vindhyachal plant successfully synthesized methanol by combining captured CO2 from flue gas with hydrogen produced by a PEM electrolyzer. This CO2-to-methanol facility, along with the carbon capture plant, represents the first of its kind globally.
Singh emphasized NTPC’s commitment to a sustainable future, highlighting the company's efforts in renewable energy, including nuclear, and ongoing projects like Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel. NTPC recently developed and tested the country’s first indigenous methanol synthesis catalyst, making notable advancements in hydrogen and carbon capture technologies.
The event also included the unveiling of NTPC’s 50th-year logo, representing its contributions to India’s progress, the release of new IT applications, and a special comic book for NTPC's Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), a flagship CSR program benefiting over 10,000 rural girls.
As India’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC supplies a quarter of the nation’s power, with ambitious plans for a sustainable energy transition.
