ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is set to launch a 2 million tonne production capacity for advanced automotive steel products at its Hazira plant by March. This initiative aims to eliminate the need for the Indian automotive sector to import high-end steel, aligning with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.
The company has invested ₹8,500 crore in the project, which is in the advanced stage of securing approvals from various automobile manufacturers. The facility will feature a Continuous Galvanizing Line and a Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Line, integrating expertise from its parent companies, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. The production lines are expected to become fully operational by 2025.
The advanced units will produce coated and uncoated steel products, including licensed offerings from the parent companies, with strength levels up to 1180 MPa. This expansion builds on the success of AM/NS India’s Optigal and Magnelis product launches last year.
Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice-President – Sales and Marketing at AM/NS India, highlighted the initiative's potential to replace 15% of the 8 million tonnes of automotive steel currently imported by the sector. “The response from the auto industry has been very encouraging. We are already supplying about 1.2 million tonnes of auto-grade steel and expect our market share to grow to 30–35%,” Dhar said.
The auto-grade steel market in India, currently at 7.8 million tonnes annually, is projected to grow by 7% each year. AM/NS India’s new capacity will cater to this demand while promoting self-reliance in the industry.
In addition to its automotive steel expansion, the company plans to increase its overall crude steel production capacity from 9 million tonnes to 15 million tonnes per year with an investment of over ₹60,000 crore.
AM/NS India is also showcasing its automotive offerings and ArcelorMittal’s Multi-Part Integration (MPI) solutions at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. MPI solutions streamline manufacturing, integrate multiple components into single designs, and enable modular applications for cost and process efficiencies.
