In response to frequent accidents along NH 66 between Kazhakkoottam and Kovalam, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the construction of an additional flyover at the Kumarichantha Junction. The 800-meter-long flyover aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce accidents in the area.
The NHAI has awarded the contract for the project, and soil testing is currently underway. NHAI Thiruvananthapuram project director, Debaprasad Sahoo, explained that the flyover is necessary due to the junction's traffic issues. The flyover will include approach roads, 15-meter retaining walls, and two pillars at the junction. The project is estimated to be completed in 12 months, with piling work set to begin after the completion of soil testing. The total cost of the project is approximately Rs 22 crore.
In addition to the flyover, the NHAI is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for installing streetlights at several accident-prone spots along NH 66, including the Venpalavattom overpass, Muttathara overpass, Enchakkal flyover, Kumarichantha flyover, and the Thiruvallam service bridge. Streetlighting will also be installed along the Kazhakkoottam-Kadampattukonam stretch and by Lulu Mall from the mall to MGM Public School.
Furthermore, the state archaeology department has granted the NHAI permission to proceed with the construction of the service bridge at Thiruvallam, after previously halting the work due to concerns about its proximity to the historically significant Parasurama Temple.
