Model roads project to resume soon.
Coimbatore corporation's famed Model Roads project is expected to resume in a couple of days after nearly a month's break.
The corporation had to stop the project following differences with other State agencies in deciding the alignment of their cables and pillar boxes on D.B. Road and T.V. Samy Road , said sources, adding that following a recent meeting, the differences had been sorted out.
While the agencies were asking for money for shifting cables, the corporation was not willing to foot the bill. But it was willing to help in shifting the pillar boxes on the pavements. According to the arrangement, the corporation would spend around ₹2 crore for shifting over 100 such pillar boxes of BSNL and Tangedco on the two streets.
As for taking the overhead cables to underground, the corporation would go ahead by laying the trenches and leave it to the respective agencies to shift those at a later date.
Soon, the corporation would share the drawing for location of the power boxes with the agencies concerned and resume work within a week.
The corporation had been working on the Model Road project on the two streets in R.S. Puram as part of the policy of promoting non-motorised transport and redesigning the streets to suit pedestrians and bicyclists.
The sources said that the work on building similar model roads on Sanganoor Road, M.K. Palayam Road, Race Course, and NSR Road would also being soon.
