India’s Longest Highway Tunnel Nears Completion on Delhi-Mumbai Corridor in Mukundra Reserve.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway's longest tunnel, passing through Rajasthan's Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR), is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the project's development.

This eight-lane tunnel—the first of its kind in India—features two parallel tubes, each with four lanes. It spans 4.9 km, including a 3.3 km underground section and a 1.6 km stretch constructed using the cut-and-cover method. The breakthrough ceremony for Tube-1, connecting Kota to Chechat, was held on Friday, celebrating the successful completion of excavation.

A senior National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official confirmed that while Tube-1 is fully excavated, only 60 meters of work remains in Tube-2 (Chechat to Kota), which is expected to be completed within a month. Following this, the tunnel’s width and height will be expanded in certain sections.

The full excavation is set to conclude by June 2024, after which road construction and installation of advanced systems—including lighting, sensors, pollution control, supervisory control and data acquisition, and AI-based monitoring—will begin. The tunnel is expected to be operational by December 2025.

Currently, the tunnel's width is being expanded from 9 meters to 19 meters, while the height will increase from 8 meters to 11 meters by March 2024. Security systems, electrical installations, and communication networks will also be integrated.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, spanning 1,350 km, is India's longest eight-lane access-controlled highway, with the potential for future expansion to 12 lanes. In Rajasthan, 327 km of the 373 km stretch under construction are already operational. However, traffic movement will commence on the remaining sections once interchanges are completed, according to NHAI officials.
