CONCOR Commences DPD Rail Movement from Gateway Terminals India at Jawaharlal Nehru Port

Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR), a state-run rail hauler, has initiated the evacuation of direct port delivery (DPD) containers arriving at Jawaharlal Nehru Port by rail, marking a pioneering effort to alleviate congestion at terminal gates, provide a sustainable alternative to road transport, and reduce emissions.

Under the DPD scheme, import containers are directly delivered to pre-approved clients at the port, bypassing the need for clearance at a container freight station (CFS) located outside the port area. This streamlined process reduces cargo dwell time and costs for shippers.

In collaboration with Gateway Terminals India (GTI) and PSA BDP, CONCOR commenced the movement of two rakes on May 11 and 12, transporting cargo from the rail siding of GTI at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Nhava Sheva to its Varnama ICD at Vadodara, and onward to SABIC's plant.

GTI, a prominent private container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, operates as a joint venture between APM Terminals Management B V and CONCOR. APM Terminals Management is a subsidiary of Danish shipping and transport conglomerate A P Moller-Maersk A/S.

Previously, DPD import containers from GTI and other terminals at Jawaharlal Nehru Port were evacuated by road.

According to a CONCOR official, the shift to rail transportation offers multiple benefits, including reducing gate congestion at GTI and providing cost-effective movement for customers. Moreover, rail movement significantly contributes to decarbonization by offering a sustainable alternative to traditional road transportation, thereby reducing emissions.

This initiative aligns with GTI's strategic objective of enhancing rail movement for containers, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.
