Chennai Metro takes up extension work.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. has kick-started the first phase of the extension from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar in North Chennai.

It has invited international bids from eligible bidders for design validation and construction of underground station boxes diaphragm wall at Sir Thiyagaraya College and Korrukupet. This includes associated cut-cover and bored TBM tunnels.

The Urban Development Ministry recently approved the phase-I extension project, and sent it Public Investment Board for appraisal.

The ₹3,770-crore, 9-km project is partly underground from Washermenpet to Korukkupet and then continues as an elevated corridor up to Wimco Nagar.

The State government gave its approval for the project in October 2010 after conducting the soil test. However, only recently, the project was approved by the Centre.
