The environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for the 4000-MW thermal power project, being set up by the NTPC at Atchutapuram is in full swing. The study reports are expected to be completed by May-end. The NTPC is establishing 4,000 MW with imported coal over 1,200 acres, allocated by the AP government, at Atchutapuram and Rambilli mandals in the district with an investment of Rs. 20,000 crore. NTPC management has floated tenders for the main equipment for the plant and the management has put the project on fast track.

This is the first time in the country that the NTPC is executing four 1,000-mw coal-based units with super critical technology to get optimum efficiency with minimal emissions. The plant requires 13.7 million tonne coal per annum to achieve 90 per cent plant load factor. Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) is constructing the boundary wall for the site which is expected to be completed soon.
