AP Cancels Kiran Reddy's Pet Project for Chittoor.
In a significant move, Andhra Pradesh government on recently cancelled ‘Chittoor District Drinking Water Supply Project’ which was sanctioned by Kiran Kumar Reddy government of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh with an estimated cost of `4,300 crore.
The project aimed to supply drinking water to Tirupati including Tirumala, Chittoor, Madanapalli, Punganur and Palamaneru urban local bodies and rural areas of Chittoor district. Now, the TDP government felt that the proposed ‘State Wide Water Grid’ with multiple sources may be more advantageous to Chittoor district to supply water than the ‘Chittoor District Drinking Water Project’.
“Water Grid would address not only drinking water needs but also irrigation and industrial needs of Chittoor District,” the government stated in its order. Hence, it cancelled the Drinking Water Project, planned by the previous government.
While explaining the reasons for cancelling the project, the government said in its order, “After bifurcation, government felt the necessity of solving drinking water needs of both the rural and urban areas of the State. Hence, it proposed to form a State Wide Water Grid for head works as well as transporting water to the edge of the local bodies including Panchayats as well as Municipalities.”
Accordingly, an Expert Committee was constituted in September 2014 to study the region wise availability of water for tapping into proposed State Wide Water Grid. Since then, a series of meetings had been conducted at government level on continuation of Chittoor District Drinking Water Supply Project. After examining the project feasibility, availability of funds, and issue of expenditure incurred so far, Vice Chairman & MD, of Infrastructure Corporation AP had in his report recommended to State government to scrap the Project.
“Although agreements were entered with contractors, no work has been grounded in the field so far. It is also observed from the report of the VC & MD, INCAP that there are certain advantages with AP State Water Grid when compared with the Chittoor District Drinking Water Supply Project,” the State government stated.
“Considering the various technical issues and the feasibility of having multiple sources of raw water & increased LPCD for both urban & rural areas, government has decided to cancel the entire scheme of Chittoor District Drinking Water Supply Project. Consequent on cancellation of the project, all the orders issued by the government on the subject stand revoked,” the GO stated.
In fact, the Chittoor District Drinking Water Supply Project was contemplated to supply safe drinking water to several areas in Chittoor by transporting the water from Kandaleru Reservoir in SPSR Nellore District in two phases covering 8468 habitations in 46 Mandals and 5 Urban local bodies in phase-I including Main Trunk Lines & Secondary Trunk Lines.
