ABB India Invests ₹140 Crore in Motor Manufacturing, Launches Rare Earth-Free IE5 Motors.
Engineering services firm ABB India has announced an investment of over ₹140 crore to expand and modernise its Low Voltage (LV) motors manufacturing facility in India. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen India’s role as a global manufacturing hub.
The investment coincides with the launch of ABB’s new IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors, which are rare earth-free and designed for industrial applications. These motors, with power ratings from 45 kW to 1000 kW, are compatible with both Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) systems.
“Our strategic investment is not just about building capacity, it’s about reinforcing our long-term vision for India as a key global manufacturing hub,” said Stefan Floeck, President – IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB.
The launch comes at a crucial time, following China's April 2025 export restrictions on seven rare earth elements and magnets—critical components in sectors such as defense, energy, and automotive—which have disrupted global supply chains. ABB’s rare earth-free solution aims to mitigate these risks and offer a more sustainable alternative for industrial motor users.
