65% of Az-Zour Power Plant completed.

Shamal Az-Zour Al-Oula announced that 65% of phase 1 of Az-Zour Power Plant has been completed. The gas-fired combined cycle power and water plant is located about 100 kilometers south from Kuwait city.

The power plant is a part of the Az-Nour North Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP). Phase 1 includes the construction of the power plant along with a desalination plant.

The plant will receive two more turbines and is expected to generate electricity by June 2015.

The integrated power and desalination plant is scheduled to be completed and commissioned by Q4 2016 and the entire project is valued at USD 1.4 billion.

Hyundai heavy industries (HHI) were appointed the EPC contractor for the power plant and Sidem was appointed the EPC contractor for the desalination plant.

In addition, the project is expected to produce 10 percent of the total state power generated in Kuwait.
