Wapda plans Tarbela Dam Power Station expansion

Ghazi: Wapda, the state-run utility company, is embarking on a major expansion of the Tarbela Dam Power Station, one of the largest water reservoirs and power producing stations in Pakistan. The agency has drawn up plans to establish 4th tunnel near the dam in a bid to generate 960-MW additional power from the existing 3,700-MW hydroelectric station.

Wapda will install two units of 480-MW each power plants at an estimated investment of $ 2-bn. The Federal Government has agreed to offer monetary assistance while it is being considered to raise debt portion from overseas financial institutions.

It may be noted that the Tarbela Dam Power Station had till now generated 3.4 billion megawatts of electricity. The value of the power generated was Rs. 12.6 trillion.
