Vedanta Aluminium, the leading aluminium producer in India, has successfully commissioned a new 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) unit at its alumina refinery located in Lanjigarh, Odisha. With this addition, the refinery's annual capacity has surged to 3.5 MTPA.
A statement released by the company underlined that this 1.5 MTPA expansion is part of an ongoing initiative to elevate the Lanjigarh refinery's overall nameplate capacity from 2 MTPA to 5 MTPA. These expansions are strategically designed to support the company's growing aluminium production ambitions, with aims to position itself among the top three global players in the industry.
Vedanta Aluminium is renowned for offering high-quality aluminium products, including the nation's first low-carbon "green" aluminium range, branded Restora. These products cater to critical sectors such as automotive, aerospace, defence, infrastructure, power projects, electricals, and packaging.
Additionally, the company is a major producer of premier smelter grade alumina (SGA), a crucial raw material for its aluminium plants located in Jharsuguda (Odisha) and BALCO (Chhattisgarh).
John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the strategic significance of the expanded capacity, stating, "...the expanded capacity strengthens our raw material security and reduces costs for our Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. It is a significant step towards 100 per cent vertical integration and strongly positions us for sustainable growth within the global aluminium market."
Vedanta Aluminium currently accounts for over 50 per cent of aluminium production in the country, underscoring its dominant position in the industry and its commitment to continuous expansion and innovation.
