NTPC Shuts Down 220 MW Barauni Stage-I Project Permanently

NTPC, the state-owned power behemoth, has made the decision to permanently shutter its Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I, which boasts a capacity of 220 MW.

In a regulatory filing made on Saturday, it was stated, "Operation of NTPC Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I (2x110 MW) comprising of two Units (Unit 6 & 7) of 110 MW each (along with all Auxiliary systems except CHP, Switchyard, Ash Dyke and Township) shall be permanently discontinued w.e.f. 31st March 2024."

Established in 1975, NTPC has set an ambitious target of reaching a capacity of 130 GW by the year 2032. The acquisition of Barauni Thermal Power Station, situated in the Begusarai district of Bihar, took place on December 15, 2018, from Bihar State Power Generation Company.

Upon acquisition, the power station boasted a capacity of 720 MW, comprising 2 units of 110 MW each (under renovation and modernization) and 2 units of 250 MW each (under construction), forming both Stage-I and Stage-II.

Union Power Minister RK Singh formally inaugurated Stage-II, featuring a capacity of 500 MW (2x250 MW), of the NTPC Barauni Thermal Power Station in November 2021.

It's noteworthy that the project is interlinked with the Badam Coal Block, which is an integral part of the transfer scheme.
