PowerGrid Awards 6 GW HVDC Transmission Contract to GE Vernova for Rajasthan–Maharashtra Corridor
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has awarded GE Vernova a major contract for developing a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system connecting Barmer II in Rajasthan with South Kalamb in Maharashtra.
The contract was formally announced on 6 November 2026, following a Letter of Award dated 3 November.
The project will facilitate the evacuation of renewable electricity from Rajasthan's solar and wind energy zones to major consumption centres, strengthening India's national transmission infrastructure.
GE Vernova's scope includes engineering, design, equipment supply, installation, testing and commissioning of HVDC converter stations configured as two 3,000 MW systems.
The project will incorporate advanced line-commutated converter technology and digital grid control systems to improve transmission efficiency, reliability and power flow management.
The development is expected to generate substantial opportunities for electrical equipment manufacturers, engineering contractors and transmission infrastructure suppliers.
