Petronet LNG's Gopalpur Terminal Project Cost Surges by Over ₹4,000 Crore to ₹6,354.8 Crore.

State-run Petronet LNG (PLL), India's largest importer of liquefied natural gas, announced on Friday a significant increase in the project cost for its upcoming terminal in Gopalpur, Odisha. The estimated expenditure has surged by over ₹4,000 crore as the company pivots from a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU)-based terminal to a more expensive land-based unit.

The primary driver behind this strategic shift is the scarcity of available FSRUs, compelling PLL to opt for a land-based solution.

PLL's Board officially granted in-principle approval for the additional investment. The new plan outlines the development of a 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) land-based LNG terminal, an upgrade from the previously approved 4 MTPA FSRU-based facility. This change will incur an incremental project cost of ₹4,048.80 crore, which includes all applicable taxes and duties.
