India's 21-Year Journey to Establish Chabahar Port: A Timeline

The initial 10-year agreement between New Delhi and Tehran to develop and operate a berth named Shahid Behesti in Chabahar faced setbacks due to geopolitical challenges. Talks saw a significant slowdown in 2018 when the Donald Trump administration imposed new sanctions on Iran. Furthermore, the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan in 2021 further complicated negotiations, leading to the exclusion of Afghanistan from the discussions.

However, a recent agreement signed on Monday is expected to mark the culmination of a 21-year-long effort by India to establish a strategic foothold in the region.
