Hyundai Motor Partners with IITs for Battery and Electrification Research.

Hyundai Motor Group has formed strategic partnerships with three Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to drive research in battery technology and electrification, focusing on the Indian market’s specific needs. The collaboration includes IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras.

A key initiative of the partnership is the creation of the Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Delhi, which will be funded by Hyundai Motor Group. The CoE will lead efforts in advancing battery and electrification technologies, with a long-term goal of supporting India's electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

Representatives from Hyundai and the IITs, including Prof. Rangan Banerjee (IIT Delhi), Sachin C. Patwardhan (IIT Bombay), and Manu Santhanam (IIT Madras), attended a signing ceremony at IIT Delhi to formalize the partnership.

Hyundai's R&D Planning and Coordination Center head, Naksup Sung, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing that the Hyundai CoE will help develop a network of talented individuals and foster innovation in India.

The Group will invest $7 million over five years, from 2025 to 2029, to support joint research in battery and electrification. The partnership will also explore software development and hydrogen fuel cell technologies. The collaboration aims to complement India’s efforts to expand its EV distribution and strengthen its automotive research ecosystem, particularly through IIT Delhi’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART).

The Hyundai CoE will facilitate technical exchanges between experts in India and Korea, offering lectures, training programs, and fostering mid-to-long-term employment opportunities. This initiative further solidifies Hyundai's commitment to India, aligning with its goal of developing India-specific products and expanding its presence in the country.
