Gadkari okays NPP for Sagarmala project.

In a bid to engage maritime states in the Sagarmala port development project, the Centre recently highlighted opportunities emerging from the proposed integrated transport programme while lining up Rs. 70,000 crore for upgrade of major ports.

Chairing the first meeting of National Sagarmala Apex Committee, minister for shipping and road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said apart from faster movement of freight, the integrated port development programme would result in huge saving in logistics cost.

The NSAC provides overall policy guidance and high-level coordination with states and central government departments. The Union cabinet gave its ‘in principle’ approval to the Sagarmala project in March this year. An initial fund of Rs 692 crore was earmarked for the project in the 2015-16 budget.

The minister who reviewed the progress made under the Sagarmala project approved the approach and methodology of the preparation of the national perspective plan (NPP) and the identification of “early bird “projects till the finalisation of NPP. A ministry said one of the focus areas of the conference was to highlight the opportunities emerging from the origin destination study of coal.
