Doordarshan to launch Mobile TV service

New Delhi: National broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) has decided to offer mobile television services on a private-public partnership (PPP) basis in 17 cities.

The service will be rolled out in five phases, begining with metro cities. It will have 16 channels and the private partner will operate 12 channels only on a revenue sharing basis. The private partner will manage content aggregation, marketing, operation and maintenance.

DD will offer TV tower, power supply and spectrum. The private player will have to invest in setting up transmitters, antennae and other equipment required for mobile TV technology.

The partnership will be for a period of 5 years after which a new revenue sharing arrangement will be worked out.

Doordarshan had reviously launched Mobile TV services on a pilot basis in parts of Delhi by using the DVB-H technology from Nokia.

Mobile TV services provide subscribers to view TV programmes on handheld or portable devices.
