Denmark’s Rockwool Group Invests ₹550 Crore to Establish New Factory in Cheyyar, Tamil Nadu

Denmark-based Rockwool Group, a global leader in fire-resilient stone wool insulation, is set to expand its manufacturing operations in India with a new greenfield factory at Cheyyar, Tamil Nadu, with an investment of ₹550 crore.

The new factory will cover 50,000 square meters within a 56-acre site, strategically positioned to meet the increasing demand for non-combustible stone wool insulation in the region. This expansion is a key step in strengthening Rockwool's presence in India’s insulation market. The facility, expected to be operational by the first half of 2026, will employ approximately 150 people and will produce non-combustible, recyclable, and durable stone wool insulation.

Thomas Kähler, Chairman of the Board of the €3.6-billion Rockwool Group, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “I am pleased to announce our second investment in India — a €50-million facility near Chennai. India’s strong commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable solutions aligns perfectly with our offerings. This expansion is just the beginning, as we anticipate further developments in response to the growing demand for our products.”

Rockwool first established its presence in India in 2011 with a facility in Dahej, Gujarat, which currently produces about 40,000 tonnes of stone wool-based sustainable solutions annually. The Cheyyar factory, with a planned capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year, will be larger and will focus on producing innovative products for specialized applications, particularly in fire safety.

Darryl Mathews, Managing Director of Rockwool Asia, highlighted the growing demand for the company’s non-combustible products in India, along with plans to introduce dual-density technology for residential renovation and construction projects. He explained that the company serves three key segments: general building insulation, industrial applications such as oil refineries and cement industries, and the OEM segment, particularly for insulated panels.

Mathews emphasized that Rockwool’s products are designed to enhance energy efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact, while also improving acoustic and thermal conditions, contributing significantly to the comfort and well-being of building occupants.

Rockwool's primary raw material is stone, which is abundant and sustainable. The company is committed to recycling materials and plans to expand its recycling practices in India by re-melting old products into new ones.
